Scrapbooking Goes Virtual With Facebook’s New Timeline

  • At the f8 conference last week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled Timeline, the biggest of many changes to Facebook profiles. Timeline is essentially a scrapbook of a persons life. Facebook automatically adds photos, status updates and milestones from your Facebook history and puts it all in one place. A user’s Timeline starts at your first Facebook post, however, you can also manually add photos and content from your past in the “Way Back” section. This means that some Timelines may chronicle a person’s life from the day they were born.

The Timeline layout will replace the profiles people are used to seeing. Users can opt not to use the new layout initially, but over time, everyone will have to use the new format. Facebook plans to slowly roll out Timeline starting on September 29.

Facebook already shocked users after upgrading and adding several new features to the site last week. The addition of the subscribe button and the ticker, which provides a real-time list of things your friends are posting, received mixed reviews from users. Nevertheless, in true Facebook fashion, the changes were made, people complained and now they’re getting used to it. Will the same thing happen with Timeline? Or will it be the straw that breaks the camel’s back and pushes the masses over to Google+?

    Only time will tell.
