Week In Review

  • CherryOnTop gives you sports fans everything you may have missed over the last week with our ‘Week in Review.’

NBA…The players again rejected the NBA’s proposal of a 50-50 split of BRI (basketball-related income), and have decided to decertify their union and put the failed negotiations with the league’s owners into the court’s hands in both Minnesota and California. Commissioner David Stern has now cancelled games thru December 15, and with the players filing the antitrust lawsuits, the long, tedious process could potentially put the entire 2011-12 season in jeopardy.

College Basketball…Duke Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski won his 903rd career game, and became the all-time winningest coach in Division 1 basketball history by defeating the Michigan State Spartans 74-69 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Coach K passed his mentor, Bob Knight on the all-time list.

Pro Boxing…Manny Pacquiao retained his WBO welterweight championship in a controversial majority decision over Juan Manuel Marquez. Marguez was so upset about the judge’s scoring after the fight and is contemplating retiring from the sport after 18 years and an impressive 53-6-1 record with 39 knockouts. With the victory, Pacquiao upped his mark to 54-3-2 with 38 KOs, and maintains his status as the world’s best pound-for-pound pugilist.

MLB…2011 World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals hired former All-Star catcher Mike Matheny as their new field manager, replacing the recently retired future Hall-Of-Famer Tony LaRussa.
Off-Season Transactions: All-Star relief pitcher Jonathan Papelbon inks a four-year, $50 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, the most lucrative deal for a closer to date. Papelbon won a World Series title as a member of the Boston Red Sox back in 2007….Center fielder and 2011 NL MVP candidate Matt Kemp signs an eight-year, $160 million contract extension to remain a Los Angeles Dodger….Former major league player Dale Sveum was hired as the new manager of the Chicago Cubs.
MLB award winners: AL Rookie – Jeremy Hellickson, SP, Tampa Bay Rays; NL Rookie – Craig Kimbrel, RP, Atlanta Braves; AL Cy Young – Justin Verlander, SP, Detroit Tigers; NL Cy Young – Clayton Kershaw, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers; AL Manager – Joe Maddon, Tampa Bay Rays; NL Manager – Kirk Gibson, Arizona Diamondbacks.

NFL…Quarterback and league MVP front-runner Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers crushed the Minnesota Vikings 45-7 to stay undefeated at 9-0. Meanwhile, on the minus side, the Indianapolis Colts stay winless at 0-10, falling victim to the Jacksonville Jaguars 17-7, and will be without their franchise QB Peyton Manning for the rest of the season as he continues to heal from off-season neck surgery. The team on the rise and playing extremely well thus far are the 7-3 Houston Texans, and barring any major setbacks in their remaining six games of the regular season, they should clinch their first playoff berth in franchise history.

College Football…The L.S.U. Tigers were unanimously voted as the No. 1-ranked team in the country by the Associated Press, garnering all 60 first-place tallies. Not since the Texas Longhorns in 2008 has a team been a unanimous No. 1 during the regular season.

NHL…Ed Belfour, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk and Mark Howe (son of the legendary Gordie Howe) were inducted as the Class of 2011 into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
