Several celebrities, including John Legend, Russell Simmons, Samuel L. Jackson, Usher, Mary J. Blige, Queen Latifah, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, assembled at Grace Baptish Church in Mt. Vernon, NY yesterday to pay their respects at the funeral of Heavy D, who passed away last Tuesday in Los Angeles. In his speech during the somber affair, Sean “Diddy” Combs told the audience, “[Heavy] was the first person to believe in me,” and rightfully so since Heavy gave the hip-hop mogul his first break with an internship at Uptown Records in the early 90s. In a statement read by the Rev. Al Sharpton, President Barack Obama also paid homage to the late hip-hop legend. “We extend our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time,” said the President. “He will be remembered for his infectious optimism and many contributions to American music. Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.” Both Both Johnny Gill and Anthony Hamilton delivered heartfelt performances during the service.
The Overweight Lover…gone but never forgotten. Rest in Peace Heavy…
