Controversial Spread Featuring Two Nude Models Speaks Volumes About Body Image
-

With all the skinny vs. curvy controversy going on these days, people are definitely speaking out and saying enough is enough. Many celebrities are under constant scrutiny for what they wear, who they date and especially how they look. If a celebrity gains a few pounds they are judged relentlessly for it. Some comments even go as far as calling them “fat or overweight” when there is a great possibility that they indeed are not. It’s the same story for a person in the limelight who loses weight. The media will crucify the celebrity and classify them as being “too skinny.” While this unfortunately may be accurate in some cases, it is ultimately an exaggerated ploy to lure in a hungry audience. But is it working? Does the media put too much pressure on celebrities to look like runway models? Is this in turn having an effect on real women all over the world? The answer is yes.
This month, PLUS Model Magazine features a thought-provoking 8-page editorial where a nude plus size and a frail looking runway model pose together beside provocative statements that address the issue of weight. One page reads, “Most runway models meet the Body Mass Index physical criteria for Anorexia.” While there is no way of determining if a woman is actually healthy or not solely by looking at her appearance, it is definitely a scary thought. Especially considering that only 1 in every 40,000 women has a supermodel-like body.
While the goal of the article is to bring awareness to the issues women face with body image, it is also hoping to light a spark and create a change in fashion’s marketing strategies. For example, one of the most iconic women of all time, Marilyn Monroe wore a size 14 and so do many women today. It encourages the industry to go back in time and use more women like this, women of all sizes, women we feel we can relate to. In doing so, the industry would appeal in a more positive way to people of all walks of life. The result? Everyone wins.
People tend to forget that there are a wide range of healthy weights. It depends on your height and many other factors. Some women are naturally thin, others curvy; some women muscular, others bootylicious. No matter what body type you are, as long as you’re healthy – be confident with what you’re working with and everyone else will be too!
