Three Tips To Staying On Top Of Your Health This New Year

  • Have too many resolutions this year? Don’t let eating healthy slip between the cracks! The key to maintaining a healthy diet is all about awareness and simple planning. Planning? Simple? I know, I know. Between working unpredictable hours, rushing from classes and running errands, planning out your meals might not always be the easiest. Here are three effortless tips to help you stay on top of the game.

    1. Pick a day to prepare.

For many of us, Monday starts the work week, so why not use Sunday to map out what you will be eating for the forthcoming days? Prepare a healthy soup such as beef and pinto bean chili, or make a large veggie-filled salad that you can break down into separate containers and take to work for lunch. (Leave the dressing on the side until you are ready to eat, to avoid soggy lettuce.) Hard-boil a few eggs and bag them separately to take for breakfast or even a protein-filled snack. Grill a few pieces of chicken that can be kept in the refrigerator and reheated for later use. If you take the time to be proactive before you’re hungry and have healthy foods ready and waiting to be eaten, you will be less likely to reach for a quick junk food fix.

    2. Expect the unexpected.

Some days we might think that we have it all under control but then BAM!–something comes up that messes up our plan and leaves us regretfully eating half a box of donuts at the company meeting. Don’t let one slip-up start a downward spiral. Always pack an additional snack that is healthy! There are going to be times when a treat looks tempting, but if you have an alternative such as an apple or granola bar that will satisfy your hunger instead, it will be easier to say “No.”

    3. Be a role model.

It feels good to be a leader and not a follower. But if you ever get a little lost, there is a free website, Swole.me, that can help you stay on track by generating a meal plan based on your preferred calorie intake. It may even help to broaden your wholesome food horizons! No matter what, always keep a positive attitude and celebrate from time to time the admirable commitment that you’ve made to yourself. When others see the progress you’ve made, it encourages them to do the same.

Get on top and stay on top! Take a trip you’ve always wanted, go to the theater and reward yourself. You deserve it!
